Here is an overview of frequently asked questions related to the Closed for Maintenance working days.

 

1. WHAT WILL I NEED TO PAY FOR?

You will only need to pay for your flight ticket (see more on flight discounts further down the list). Accommodation and food will be provided during the Closed for Maintenance period.  
 

2. WHAT WILL BE MAINTAINED/BUILT?

More information about the specific projects during a given year is updated once we reach the project date and can be found (along with previous projects) here.

 

3. WHERE WILL THE MAINTENANCE PROJECTS TAKE PLACE?

Projects are confirmed in some of the country’s most popular sites among tourists and locals and will vary each year depending on the need for restoration. The most common places include Nólsoy, Tjørnuvík, Funningur, Klaksvík, Suðuroy, Skúvoy, Hestoy and Vágar.

 

4. WHICH ACTUAL PROBLEMS WILL THE PROJECTS SOLVE?

Local municipalities and tourist information centres across the country have identified maintenance issues in their regions. The problems that will be solved are ones that local communities would like to see solved. In most cases, they have identified challenges in guiding visitors to specific locations and creating good walking conditions that help hikers, preserve the environment and have as little impact on farming as possible.

 

4. ARE TOURISTS CAUSING PROBLEMS IN THE FAROE ISLANDS?

The Faroe Islands is in its infancy as a tourism destination and most areas have not felt any effects of tourism. We will do all we can to keep them that way and to maintain the few areas that have experienced more visitors, both locals and tourists. These sites could do with some tender loving care. Most tourists travel to the Faroe Islands for our nature and the work that will be carried out for this project will, therefore, to a large degree focus on maintaining or building paths in popular areas.

 

5. HOW MANY PEOPLE FROM THE FAROE ISLANDS WILL PARTICIPATE?

40 spots are up for grabs for locals who want to lend a helping hand. In addition, there will be one or several local project leaders managing the different projects, so that the projects will be manned by approximately 50/50 – locals and foreigners.

 

6. WILL THE TOURISM INDUSTRY TAKE PART?

People from the tourism industry, such as regional tourist information centres, Visit Faroe Islands, incoming agencies, etc., will take part. All projects are done in collaboration with local municipalities.

 

7. HOW WILL I BE ACCOMMODATED?

Accommodation will be provided to all volunteers during the maintenance period. Should a volunteer wish to arrive prior to the Closed period or stay longer to explore the islands even more (as many do), they would need to book it themselves. Volunteers will be staying in the villages/islands where they will be working. Accommodation will be basic but good, with shared bedrooms and facilities.

 

8. WILL FOOD BE PROVIDED?

Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided for all volunteers during the maintenance period. Volunteers will also receive a light meal upon arrival, and a meal during the celebratory party on the final day.

 

9. HOW WILL IT ALL END?

Locals that have helped out and all volunteers from abroad will be invited to a big celebratory party on the final evening with free food, drinks and entertainment.

 

10. HOW WILL I GET FROM ONE PLACE TO ANOTHER?

Buses will drive volunteers around, from arrival until departure during the maintenance period.

 

11. IS THERE A MORE DETAILED ITINERARY?

A detailed overview of the Closed programme will be posted and shared will all volunteers closer to the event.

 

12. DO I NEED SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS TO PARTICIPATE?

No specific requirements are needed. But note that most projects will take place on uneven terrain. Projects will be of various difficulty levels, meaning volunteers do not need to be highly skilled. A willingness to assist and a fairly physically fit shape is the only criterion. You must be 18 years of age before the 5th of May during the given year to be part of the Maintenance Crew.

 

13. WHAT ABOUT FLIGHT TICKETS?

You will need to buy flight tickets to the Faroe Islands yourself. We have an agreement with our local partner, Atlantic Airways, about promotion codes, which will ensure all participants with a discount, when purchasing the tickets.

 

14. WHAT TYPE OF CLOTHES SHOULD I BRING?

The weather in the Faroe Islands is unpredictable and ever-changing. It is, therefore, a good idea to pack a variety of clothing, suited to all sorts of weather. September is mostly cool’ish, around 6-10°C.

We recommend a comfortable sweater, rainproof coat and trousers, as well as sturdy walking shoes or rubber boots. Laundry facilities will be available if needed. Each volunteer will be gifted with a woollen beanie, made by a Faroese designer.

Working gear, such as gloves, will be provided if needed for the projects.

15. IF I COME WITH FRIENDS, WILL WE BE ABLE TO WORK TOGETHER?

Yes, during the registration process you can write the names of those traveling with you in a comment box. But you must sign up and pay separately. We will try our best to ensure that you will work on the same project as your friend and maybe even get to share a room.

 

16. CAN I CHOOSE WHICH PROJECT I WOULD LIKE TO WORK ON?

No. Volunteers will be assigned to different projects based on a variety of criteria that will aim to provide the best experience for all involved.

 

17. WILL THERE BE ANY FREE TIME?

There will be some spare time in the evenings. Keep in mind that you might be staying on a small island or in a remote village where we highly recommend that you enjoy the privilege of silence. Should you wish to see more of the islands, you are welcome to book your flights to stay some extra nights.

 

18. WHAT LANGUAGE WILL BE USED WHILE WORKING?

All communication will be in English.

 

19. WILL I NEED A WORK VISA?

All non-Nordic citizens will be required to obtain a work visa. The process of obtaining a work permit is simple and we will take care of the applications for you. We will provide more information and guidance once you have been admitted to the Maintenance Crew.
