FISH

The ocean and its fruits are the most important elements of Faroese life. Traditionally, the ocean was the highway of the Faroe Islands, our connection to the outside world, our transportation system and provider of food. Fishing is the backbone of Faroese existence, industry and export and we are rightfully proud of our excellent products from these clean waters. Being a good provider is still a virtue and many families will have fish drying in the clean salty air. A frugal people by necessity, the Faroese have learned to utilize the relatively scarce natural resources, even in fun activities for children.

A case in point is the game to nytra, (which is a guessing game involving the ear stone of cod a nytra), where the players take turns guessing how many more or fewer nytra the other player holds in his or her hand.
