FRESHWATER ANGLING
The Faroe Islands are known for their rich marine life but offer excellent freshwater angling. With pristine lakes and rivers scattered across the landscape, anglers can experience fishing in some of the most untouched and scenic environments in the North Atlantic.
The islands have numerous lakes and streams where anglers can try catching brown trout and Arctic char. Most freshwater fishing spots are located in stunning, remote areas, offering great fishing and breathtaking views of mountains, valleys, and waterfalls.
Fishing has always been a way of life here, and for many Faroese children, heading to a nearby lake to try their luck at catching trout is a cherished tradition. It’s a peaceful and rewarding way to spend time in nature.

FRESHWATER FISHING – PRACTICAL INFORMATION
For a sustainable fishing experience, we encourage anglers to catch only what they intend to eat. Fish stocks are carefully managed, and responsible angling helps protect delicate freshwater ecosystems. Additionally, catch-and-release is recommended if you’re fishing purely for sport.
It is not permitted to bring your catch back home with you. Any fish caught must be consumed in the Faroe Islands.
FISHING TIP
Check the Faroese weather forecast before you head out, as conditions can change rapidly. Some fishing spots necessitate hiking access, so proper footwear and appropriate clothing for the weather are advisable.
TYPES OF FISH TO CATCH
- Brown Trout – Found in many of the islands’ lakes and rivers, offering excellent sport for anglers.
- Arctic Char – Present in some of the colder, deeper lakes.
