DECEMBER IN THE FAROE ISLANDS

December in the Faroe Islands is for the curious who know that real beauty often reveals itself when nature gets a little unruly. And there is something deeply satisfying about feeling like you’ve stumbled upon a secret, far away from the usual crowds. This place shows you Christmas cheer in a way you didn't know you needed.

Winter-friendly tips from a Faroese

Alda Recommends

  1. Astrogazing | With long and dark days, Winter is a great time for stargazing. Coming from the small village of Eiði (the Northern part of Eysturoy), the skies are unlike anything else I have experienced. With minimal light pollution, they come alive. Feel the crunch of snow beneath your feet as you enjoy the solitude of a dark skywalk—just you, the cosmos, and maybe a lurking sheep or two.
  2. Northern Lights | I love catching the Northern Lights here, most often when I least expect it. The islands are positioned at 62° N on the south edge of the Arctic Circle, meaning the odds are in your favour. Venture to darker, open areas away from city lights, and watch the night sky for dancing hues of green and violet. See our guide for more tips.
  3. Weather-proof planning | Arriving in December, the wind greets you like an old friend who doesn’t understand personal space. With the right clothing and a positive mindset, a walk in the rain, snow or wind can be nature’s way of reminding you you’re alive (my grandmother used to say Atlantic rain is the best skincare, still sceptical about that one).

TOP THINGS TO DO IN DECEMBER

Wondering what to do in a place like the Faroe Islands in December? What to bring, how to prepare? December here is an experience, not just a month. There is a constant captivating contrast of light and darkness, stillness and unruliness, which makes it a truly extraordinary experience. It’s raw, real, and a little unpredictable—like you, showing up here in the off-season. Bring an open mind, a good raincoat, and a sense of humor—you’ll need all three.

Spas in the wild: Enjoy restorative spa treatments in natural surroundings. While it’s not every day, a few guesthouses and spots around the islands offer rustic hot tubs or saunas with panoramic views of the sea and mountains. In November, there’s something incredibly satisfying about sitting in warm water while cold wind and mist swirl around you.

Dine in a local ‘Heim’ (home): Embrace the warmth of Faroese hospitality with 'Heimablídni'. Enjoy a merry traditional lamb dish or a steaming bowl of Faroese soup while getting a more intimate experience with some Faroese winter storytelling (our speciality).

‘O Come, All Ye Metalheads’: What more to get into the Christmas spirit than a Heavy Metal concert? Join the Metal Christmas Bonanza with 4 of the best heavy metal bands in the Faroe Islands at the local brewery, OY

Christmas Markets: Visit the wonderful mini Christmas village in downtown Tórshavn for handmade crafts, tasty waffles with mulled wine, and an admirable display of Christmas lights and Faroese resilience to the snow & wind.

Stormcation: Go storm-watching (safely!) around the outskirts of the capital, while listening to RAMI's stories of Vikings and witnessing nature’s force - free of charge. On calmer days, take a winter hike to Kirkjubøur, Tjørnuvík or Lake Toftavatn. See our many village paths here (with helpful filters also).

TIPS FROM AN ISLANDER

  1. Storm safety: Always be mindful when venturing out for a drive, hike or exploration. The weather can change fast and conditions be unpredictable. However, have no fear, we have gathered some helpful tips here
  2. A Merry Invitation: Lighting of the Christmas tree in the Square of Tórshavn on 30th Nov. Come and experience a very cosy evening of music, warm treats and family fun.
  3. Christmas Soul: Christmas magic meets soul grooves for one festive night. Think holiday cheer, top-tier tunes, and vibes so good even Santa might ditch his sleigh to join. It’s the ultimate excuse to escape the December drizzle and soak up some musical warmth—because nothing says Christmas like soul.
  4. Hare-hunting season: Be mindful of the hare-hunting season running annually from 2 Nov to 31 December. Most people choose to hunt hares on Saturdays, but it is their right to hunt all days except Sunday. Hunting takes place in the mountains all across the country.

FAROESE WEATHER IN DECEMBER

In December, the Faroe Islands experience wind, rain, and a fleeting sense of sunshine. Temperatures hover between 3°C and 7°C, but with wind chill, for some crystal-clear skies. In December, the Faroe Islands sees the shortest period of light with sunrise at around 9.30 AM and sunset at 3 PM - daylight lasting only about five hours. But hey, the longer nights mean more chances to spot the Northern Lights (if the clouds cooperate).
