Indeed, it’s a 2 hour ferry ride from Tórshavn to reach the southernmost Faroe island which immediately puts Suðuroy well off the beaten tourist track. In many ways, life here goes on independently of the capital and the rest of the country – the island is pretty much self-containted and even boasts its own Olympic-size swimming pool and sports centre. Transport connections both to and on the island are good -- the ferry, Smyril, sails here several times daily from Tórshavn, passing the twin islands of Stóra and Lítla Dímun on the way with superb views from the outdoor decks – be sure to have your camera at the ready.
