Kyrjasteinur

Kyrjasteinur - Old schooner

The old ship Kyrjasteinur is a schooner built in Korsør, Denmark, in 1936 and brought to Fuglafjørður in 1937, during a time when the town's fishing fleet was thriving — with 15 vessels, including three schooners. Kyrjasteinur is the only ship from that era still in Fuglafjørður, and the only schooner remaining in the Faroe Islands.

It originally belonged to the shipowner Haraldsen, but in 1961 the schooner was sold out of the village. In 1992, the owner at the time intended to scrap the vessel, but instead, it was purchased by a group of men from Fuglafjørður — although they no longer lived in the village themselves. The plan was to restore Kyrjasteinur as a museum ship. Unfortunately, in February 2000, the schooner sank while moored in the fjord.

In December 2001, Kyrjasteinur was brought ashore to its current location, where it rests today.
