AUGUST IN THE FAROE ISLANDS

August in the Faroe Islands is like the coolcation you need after a hectic & warm summer! The islands burst a thousand green shades, and the seas teem with marine life and mild golden temperatures, making it a perfect time for outdoor adventures and cultural experiences. Practice your faroese at the local pub or a local village fest - maybe join in and learn the traditional Faroese dance (or at least give it your best shot).

Isolated and bashed by Atlantic elements in endless days of sun or darkness, you have to make do and go about things as best you can.

TIPS FROM AN ISLANDER

  1. In case of rain: Visit the enchanting Whaling Station by Áir (1905). The only whaling station in Scandinavia in its original state, is an industrial heritage site open for visits from mid-June until mid-August.
  2. Isle of Nólsoy: The usually chill island of Nólsoy turns for one night only into a party island with folk music, singing and dancing for the annual Ovanstevna happening on August 17th.
  3. Local Farmers Market: On the first Sunday of each month the centre of Tórshavn “Vágsbotnur” is transformed into a vegetable and harvest haven. Depending on the season you can expect the tastiest carrots, salads, potatoes, and even homemade rhubarb jam made with love.
  4. August Heather Flora: Hike around the beautiful lake Toftavatn. Enjoy the purple floras and birdlife while you pass by the statue of the Shepherd with his dog. A walk up the hill (on your way around Lake Toftavatn) will bring you to a magnificent view from the top.
