OCTOBER IN THE FAROE ISLANDS

October in the Faroe Islands is the perfect time to enjoy some quiet, foggy strolls, maybe spot a bird or two (they didn’t get the memo about summer ending), and then warm up with a hot cup of coffee that’s strong enough to wake a Viking. And if you’re lucky, you might even stumble upon a sheep gathering—because nothing says autumn like watching locals wrangle woolly jumpers. October in the Faroes is a quirky mix of calm and wild, just like the islands themselves.

“Visiting the Faroe Islands was supposed to be a tick off my bucket list. A quick, three-day detour on my way home with a jam-packed itinerary…. And, thus began a series of decisions that would derail my itinerary yet rekindle an inner creativity I’d lost touch with over the years".

TOP THINGS TO DO IN OCTOBER

Wondering what to do in a place like the Faroe Islands in Ocotber? What to bring, how to prepare? Well, during this time is like nature’s way of saying, “Hey, let’s get cozy but keep things interesting.” The Islands are dressed in their best autumn colours, as the leaves turn brilliant shades of gold and crimson, and the weather is doing its usual “four seasons in a day” routine—because who doesn’t love a surprise shower when you’re out hiking? It’s a perfect month for those seeking tranquillity, adventure, and a taste of Faroese culture.

King of the North: Explore the untamed landscapes of the northern islands, where the drama of nature rivals even the grandest tales of Westeros. Discover stunning cliffs, mystical fjords, and enchanting landscapes with our regional guide.

A Concert a Day…: With at least half the nation being some musician or in a band (it is kinda part of our identity), you can be certain there will be a concert or two while you visit. See our event calendar ‘What's On’ to hear some cool local tunes.

Skrapt Festival (18-20th Oct): Skrapt Festival is the latest addition to the Faroese cultural scene. Skrapt is located perfectly in the heart of Tórshavn, bringing together the newest sounds, the hottest acts, and a vibrant party atmosphere. A Street vibe bringing you the sharpest of the sharp and tingle your tangle in ways you didn't know you wanted.

Mikkeller Beer Festival Faroe Islands(MBCFI): This year the Mikkeller Beer Festival (one of only three worldwide) is held here in our hood of The Faroe Islands on October 11 - 12th! MBCFI isn't just about beer; it's an experience for both locals and beer enthusiasts. Set against the stunning backdrop of Torshavn, the festival will feature 30 international breweries from Europe, the USA, and, of course, the Faroe Islands.

TIPS FROM AN ISLANDER

  1. The Fall Festival: Join the precious & most hillbilly'esque village festival of all, Heystfagnaður. Happening in the cosy village, Eiði, up in the north on Eysturoy Island on the 15th - 20th of October.
  2. Deep breaths: Find peace of mind by igniting and elevating your creative spirit through local traditions. Pick up a paintbrush and craft a coffee mug or create your ideal earrings, immerse yourself in outdoor painting lessons, dabble in the art of nature printing or welcome the morning mist with a serene yoga practice.
  3. Grab your knits: Become even more faroese by knitting your very own sweater. Join a local knitting club and learn. If all else fails, you could just buy a woollen piece in one of the many secondhand shops, no one will be able to tell the difference.
  4.  Get lost & confused: Let go of that pre-decided itinerary and strive to capture those mandatory insta-worthy shots. As sometimes these "strange" islands may surprise you and bring out that spontaneous inner child. That's what Swedish journalist, Lola, did.
