Norðdepil
Discover Norðdepil, a charming village on Borðoy Island with rich fishing heritage, scenic views, and tranquil Faroese life.
Like most old Faroese municipalities, Hvannasund has changed from a traditional farming society based on fishing and industry. Today, the economy is almost entirely fish farming and small-boat fishing. The harbour conditions are good.
In 1963, a filleting plant was built in Norðdepli. Since the tunnels were built in 1967, cooperation with Klaksvík has grown stronger. In 2014, activity at the filleting plant in Norðdepli was moved to Leirvík, and since then, there has been no filleting plant in Norðdepli.
The municipality has three large fish farms, two south of the causeway and one north of it. All have land bases in Hvannasund Municipality. At Norðtoftir, there is a large smolt station, and as of 2019, there were plans for major expansions.
The municipality's transport network is well developed. Roads connect all the villages. In 1974, the causeway across Hvannasund connected Borðoy and Viðoy. The ferry to Svínoy and Fugloy sails from Hvannasund.
Although an attempt to establish a school east of Múli was made in 1737, nothing came of it until 1835. That year, a man from Viðareiði, married in Toftir (Norðtoftir), began teaching children in Toftir, Depli, and Múli. In 1837, another man from Viðareiði began teaching children in Viðareiði and Hvannasund.
A school was built in Norðdepli in 1895, and it still stands today. The children in Hvannasund were rowed to school, while others had to walk. A new school was built in Hvannasund in 1932, which houses Café Old School today.
In 1983, a new school was built at Fossanes, where all children in the municipality now attend school up to the 7th grade. Older pupils continue their schooling in Klaksvík.
