WORK PERMIT GUIDELINES FOR INTERNATIONAL TOURISM PERSONNEL IN THE FAROE ISLANDS

The general rule in Faroese immigration legislation is, that a work permit is required for all types of work in the Faroe Islands, including unpaid work, with no minimal period for exemption.

In short, all foreign tourism professionals (e.g., guides, bus drivers) need a valid work permit to operate legally in the Faroe Islands, except for citizens of Nordic countries.

  • Tourist Guides: Non-Nordic guides require permits.
  • Bus Drivers: Drivers in international traffic are exempt from transport to/from hotels but need permits for any local tours.
  • Self-Employment: Permits are granted to businesses with innovative ideas contributing to Faroese's economic growth.
  • Voluntary Work: Generally not eligible unless for special cases like environmental or cultural projects.

Applications are free and can be submitted online or via Danish representations. Processing times range from 1 to 3 months. Full details are available at www.utlendingastovan.fo.
