Conversation with the director of Jossain on valo joka ei sammu (A Light That Never Goes Out)

After watching Jossain on valo joka ei sammu (A Light That Never Goes Out), nominated for the 2026 Nordic Council Film Prize, we will meet the filmmaker behind it. Finnish filmmaker and musician Lauri-Matti Parppei will take to the stage for a short conversation about music, inspiration and the Finnish film industry.
About the film Jossain on valo joka ei sammu (A Light That Never Goes Out) tells the story of Pauli, a young and talented flautist who returns home after a nervous breakdown. He reconnects with an old school friend and becomes fascinated by experimental music, which seems to be the opposite of the classical music world he comes from. The film explores themes such as artistic identity, friendship, perfectionism, healing and the importance of where we come from.
In its citation, the jury of the Nordic Council Film Prize highlighted the role of music in the film and how it conveys a love of experimental music in a way uniquely suited to the medium of film.
About the director Lauri-Matti Parppei is a filmmaker, musician and artist based in Helsinki, Finland. With his distinctive storytelling style and his intimate, close approach to working with actors, Lauri-Matti Parppei has attracted attention. His debut feature film, A Light That Never Goes Out, was screened in the ACID programme at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and won seven Jussi Awards in Finland, including Best Director and Best Screenplay. In addition to his work in film, Lauri-Matti Parppei is also the singer and songwriter of the band Musta valo.
Six Nordic films have been nominated for the 2026 Nordic Council Film Prize. The films will be screened at the Nordic House in the Faroe Islands from 7–9 October. The winner will be announced on 20 October.
