Suðuroy is the only Faroese island with coal quantities capable of sustaining commercial production. Mine entrances are visible along the old ‘coal road’.

Coal mining in Suðuroy began in the 17th century and shaped the island’s culture and economy for centuries. At its peak in 1954, the mines supplied coal to about 75% of Faroese households.

Today, one coal mine in Hvalba is open to visitors. Here, you can step back in time and experience Faroese coal mining history and geology.

👉 Access is only available with a guide, and tours must be booked in advance.
