Coal mines of Hvalba
Discover the coal mines of Hvalba in Suðuroy—step back in time to explore Faroese mining history and stunning geology with guided tours.
Suðuroy is the only Faroese island with coal quantities capable of sustaining commercial production. Mine entrances are visible along the old ‘coal road’.
Coal mining in Suðuroy began in the 17th century and shaped the island’s culture and economy for centuries. At its peak in 1954, the mines supplied coal to about 75% of Faroese households.
Today, one coal mine in Hvalba is open to visitors. Here, you can step back in time and experience Faroese coal mining history and geology.
