Funningur
A scenic village by Funningsfjørður, surrounded by steep mountains
Funningur is a historic village located along Funningsfjørður, surrounded by steep mountains at the foot of Slættaratindur, the highest peak in the Faroe Islands. The village is known for its colourful houses clustered along the river Stórá, which runs through the settlement and out to sea.
A stone bridge, Ovarabrúgv, connects the two sides of the village, linking older and newer homes. Near the shoreline stands Funningur Church, dating back to 1847, built on a small islet by the river. The church and its surroundings reflect the long history and traditions of the village.
Funningur offers a peaceful setting and serves as a starting point for hikes to Slættaratindur. Visitors can also enjoy walks along the river and views across the fjord and towards Kalsoy.
