Kongavarðar
Viewpoint in Argir
Take a walk to Kongavarði on the top of the mountain between Kirkjubøur and Tórshavn.
This is an easy walk and from the top you have a beautiful view over Tórshavn and the islands nearby.
In 1907, the Danish King visited the Faroe Islands.
Three men walked up the mountain overlooking Tórshavn and its suburbs. They had one mission; to look for the king’s ship in the horizon, so they could send the message down to Tórshavn in order for the city to be ready to greet him. The king took a while to reach the city, so the men started to get bored. They decided to build a cairn right where they were standing. This cairn later came to be known as Kongavarði – or King’s Cairn in English.
