Savnið á Mýri in Hov

Discover Savnið á Mýri in Hov, a historic village shop turned museum featuring unique cultural events and art exhibitions.

The Mýri Museum at Hov offers a unique display of how traditional dry-salted fish was prepared in the Faroe Islands up until recent times. The saltfish business was the cornerstone of the Faroese economy from the late 19th to the mid 20th century, laying the foundation for the modern era in the Faroe Islands.
The traditional handling, washing and drying of cod paved the way for today’s advanced Faroese fish industry, with an entire cultural heritage surrounding it. The process was all manual and very demanding for the largely female workeforce.
The finished product was shipped to countries in the Mediterranean, primarily Spain, Portugal and Italy—a market that still remains for Faroese exports of salted codfish.
At the Mýri Museum we give you a fascinating insight into what ultimately created the remarkable wealth of present-day Faroe Islands. With live demonstrations and unforgettable presentations packed with surprising and intriguing pieces of information, we bring the old days back to life and provide real context to historical facts.
