The Church of skopun

Inaugurated in 1897

In 1894, Pastor Jørgen Christian Falk Rønne from Sandur submitted a cost estimate for building a new church in Skopun, consulting with Skopun residents and carpenter Jóhan Hendrik Poulsen. The plan relied on using materials from the old wooden church in Vestmanna. Pastor Rønne took steps to begin construction, arranging for Poulsen to handle carpentry and Hans Anthoniussen from Húsavík to lead the stonework.

Though eager, the Skopun residents prioritized rowing, delaying progress. Rønne eventually halted the work in March 1895, and the project resumed a year and a half later with Petur Johannesen from Tórshavn overseeing. The church was completed according to plan in September 1897. It was built of stone and plastered with cement, with a vaulted wood-lined ceiling. It was consecrated on October 17, 1897, later expanded in 1960, and reconsecrated in 1961 with the new Faroese hymn book.
