The Spinning Mill by the river

  • Faroese Micro Wool Spinnery

Micro Wool Spinnery

A family run wool spinnery - working with spinning 100% faroese wool.

The traditional Faroese proverb “Ull er Føroya Gull” (Wool is Faroese Gold) originates from a pre-industrial era when wool was a highly esteemed natural resource, meticulously processed within Faroese households.

In the Faroe Islands, sheep significantly outnumber the human population, and their presence is a common sight throughout the landscape. The indigenous Faroese sheep breed is primarily raised for its meat, and while the wool is recognized for its coarseness and itchiness, this characteristic led to much of it being discarded or burned for many years. However, local resident Jacob Martin, along with his children, embarked on a mission to transform this narrative.

The Spinning Mill by the River in Skopun is dedicated to revitalizing Faroese wool as a valuable and sustainable resource rather than allowing it to go to waste. The natural colors of Faroese sheep wool are stunning and distinctive to the region. Upon arrival at the spinning mill, the wool undergoes a thorough washing process to eliminate sand, dirt, and much of its coarseness. The result is a soft, sustainable yarn that honors the rich history and inherent beauty of Faroese wool.
