The Whaling station at Áir

  • Hvalastøðin við Áir

The Whaling station at Áir is the last preserved northern whaling station, now a museum showcasing Faroese maritime history.

The whaling station at Áir dates back to 1905.
It was part of a global Norwegian industry
that came to the Faroe Islands around the turn of the 20th century.
Norwegian companies established seven whaling stations in the Faroes.
The station at Áir was the last to be built,
and it is the only one left standing.

The station stopped producing whale oil and dry fodder in 1958.
It reopened for a few years in the 1960s and 1970s,
and people could buy whale meat here.
The last whale was flensed in 1984.

Today, the station is a museum.
The National Museum manages the station
and is responsible for its care and preservation.
