Mysterious and practical

Tumbakki consists of ten stone turf sheds in the village of Húsavík. No one knows the exact age or story surrounding the buildings, but it is believed that, in the olden times, these houses might have been used for food storage. The turf sheds are an example of practical construction with several stone layers to the west, the most common strong wind direction and only 
a single layer of stone to the east.

Today, the turf sheds can be observed from the outside, as they are private 
property and still in use.
