A small contribution to protect the Faroe Islands
A new sustainability fee will be introduced in the Faroe Islands. From 1 February 2026, visitors aged 16 and above staying in paid accommodation will pay a sustainability fee of DKK 20 per night, but it will never exceed a total of DKK 200.
This fee is part of a new sustainable tourism law, passed by the Faroese Parliament in 2024, designed to ensure that the Faroe Islands remain a special place to visit now and in the future.
How your stay makes a difference
Your contribution goes directly towards caring for the places you experience, including:
- Maintaining and improving hiking trails
- Protecting fragile landscapes and natural areas
- Supporting thoughtful tourism planning
- Strengthening local communities and culture
- Enhancing the overall visitor experience
By contributing, you help reduce wear on nature, protect local traditions, and ensure that tourism benefits both visitors and residents alike.
How the fee is collected
Each accommodation provider decides how the fee is collected from guests. This also applies to leisure boats (sail and motor). All funds are paid into a government-managed sustainability fund, which supports projects that protect nature, improve access, and promote responsible travel across the islands.
Traveling responsibly
The Faroe Islands’ approach to tourism is built on respect for our home, our people, and our nature. The sustainability fee allows visitors to actively participate in safeguarding the landscapes and helps keep the Faroe Islands wild, welcoming, and well maintained.
Thank you for being a responsible traveller.
