Sagas of Sandoy – Full-Day Tour from Kirkjubø to Sandoy

Explore the hidden gems, legends, and landscapes that connect Kirkjubø and Sandoy — two cultural and natural highlights of the Faroe Islands. This one-day tour blends dramatic scenery with local stories, archaeological sites, and breathtaking views.

Kirkjubøur – Medieval Heart of the Faroes
The tour begins at 09:00 as we head south from Tórshavn to Kirkjubø, the old cultural centre of the Faroes. This charming village, rich with legends and turf-roofed houses, feels like stepping back into the Middle Ages. We'll walk among historic sites and uncover stories that tie Kirkjubø and Sandoy together.

Through the Tunnel of Myths
Next, we drive through the new subsea tunnel connecting Streymoy to Sandoy. At 11 km long and 155 meters deep, it features a unique gallery of “modern cave paintings” by Faroese artist Edward Fuglø. These visual tales of myths and history will captivate you as we pass through.

Skopun – Record-Breaking Village
We arrive in Skopun, Sandoy’s smallest municipality, once home to the world’s largest mailbox — a quirky 7.42-meter-high landmark still standing today. From here, you can spot the old ferry port and Kirkjubø across the water.

Sandur and the White Dunes
In Sandur, we visit white-sand beaches and mystical dunes rich in rare plants and insects. The area is protected but open for walking. Excavations here suggest one of the oldest settlements in the Faroes. From the beach, you may see Skúvoy, known for its birdlife and status as a Ramsar site.

Søltuvík and Wild Nature
We journey west to Søltuvík, a remote cove often dotted with seals. Here, nature turns fierce in storms, with waves crashing against the bird cliffs. Along the road, we’ll see fossilized bark and a giant rock whimsically wrapped in knitwear.

Skarvanes – Cradle of Faroese Art
This quiet village with just 10 residents was once a hub for early Faroese visual artists. The views across Skúvoy and Dímun are breathtaking and the birdlife abundant.

Húsavík – The Cinderella Village
Marked by ancient stone walls and Viking-age ruins, Húsavík was once home to the powerful Guðrun Sjúrðardóttir. The peaceful beach and rich history make this a favourite stop.

Skálavík – Coastal Charm
Our final stop is Skálavík, a village of wide fields and summer life. With a local café by the harbor and children playing in the stream, it’s a lively yet peaceful end to our day.

Personal and Memorable
This intimate tour is designed for small groups and crafted to give a deep, local experience. Our knowledgeable guides share rich commentary, engage in conversation, and ensure you make the most of your time on this unforgettable journey through Sandoy.
