Sagas of Sandoy - Day Tour

Discover Sandoy’s history, villages, nature and unique landscapes in one day

Explore the rich history, nature, and hidden treasures of the Faroe Islands on this full-day excursion to Sandoy, combined with a visit to the historic village of Kirkjubøur.

Departing from Tórshavn, the journey begins with a scenic drive through Havnardalur, offering panoramic views of nearby islands on clear days. The first stop is Kirkjubøur, the medieval cultural centre of the Faroes. Here, you’ll explore historic surroundings and hear stories of powerful figures, myths, and legends that connect Kirkjubøur and Sandoy through time.

From there, the tour continues through the subsea Sandoyartunnilin, an 11-kilometre-long tunnel reaching 155 metres below sea level. Along the way, striking “cave paintings” by Faroese artist Edward Fuglø bring history and folklore to life.

Arriving on Sandoy, the route explores a variety of villages and landscapes. In Skopun, you’ll find the iconic oversized blue mailbox, once a world record holder. In Sandur, visit the area between Sandsvatn and the sea, where white sandy beaches and dunes create a rare and protected natural environment. Archaeological findings suggest this may be one of the oldest settlements in the Faroe Islands.

On the island’s west side, dramatic scenery unfolds near Søltuvík, where crashing waves and bird cliffs contrast with peaceful coves often visited by seals. Along the way, you’ll encounter unique geological formations and surprising sights embedded in the landscape.

The journey continues to Skarvanes, one of the smallest villages in the Faroes and considered the birthplace of Faroese visual art. From here, enjoy sweeping views towards Skúvoy and the remote islands of Stóra and Lítla Dímun.

Weather permitting, the tour also visits Dalur, reached via a narrow mountain road with spectacular views. In Húsavík, discover traces of Viking-age settlements and the legacy of Guðrun Sjúrðardóttir. Finally, pass through Skálavík, known for its relaxed atmosphere and summer charm.

This immersive day tour showcases Sandoy’s diverse landscapes, from white sand beaches and lakes to cliffs, valleys, and historic villages. With knowledgeable local guides and small group sizes, it offers a personal and engaging way to experience Faroese history, culture, and nature.
