100 Years of the Faroese Workers’ Union

BÓKADAGAR 2025: Book presentation

The Faroese Workers’ Union celebrates its 100th anniversary, and the occasion is marked by a new book publication about the union’s history. On this day, you’ll hear the story of a movement shaped by great struggles, solidarity, and change.
The narrative spans from the union’s founding to the present day. It tells of the battles, negotiations, and strikes fought for better conditions, rights, and wages for the Faroese working population.
The labour movement has achieved major victories and secured personal freedom for Faroese workers. Yet internal conflicts and party politics have, at times, challenged the unity and cohesion of the movement – and in some cases even divided it.
Only a year has passed since a major strike brought the country to a standstill – proof that the labour movement, with the Faroese Workers’ Union as its largest and most influential organization, once again demonstrated its vital role in society.
A thought-provoking insight into the ongoing struggle for justice, the power of organized solidarity, and how the fight for workers’ rights continues to shape the development of Faroese society.
Helgi Eidesgaard (b. 1985) is a historian with a special interest in the Faroese labour movement and its history. In 2017, he published Til arbeiðis! Lív ella deyð! (To Work! Life or Death!) about the first 100 years of Havnar Arbeiðarafelag.Since 2019, he has taught history and cultural studies at Glasi.
