Lyon and Karsten Vogel & Fagrir Fuglar
Saturday 25. Oct. 20.30 @ Tøting
Free entrance, doors open at 20.00
Saxophonist Karsten Vogel visited the Faroe Islands as the leader of Burning Red Ivanhoe and Secret Oyster in the early 1970s. That was before Havnar Jazzfelag was founded in 1975. In 1976, Rólant Thomsen, who organized a cultural festival in Faroe Islands that year, asked Havnar Jazzfelag to host concerts where Karsten was to be a soloist. It worked – the house orchestra, if you should call it that, all-all the first years in Havnar Jazzfelag were: Kristian Blak (piano), Kolbein Simonsen (bass) and Jan Jacobsen (drums). So it was a quartet. Nice!
What happened was that Havnar Jazzfelag had a concert in the (old) B36 building at that time. It was a double concert with Kræklingar and Karsten Vogel Quartet. Karsten was impressed by Ólavur Øster’s guitar playing – together with Kræklingar – and asked Ólav to play with his quartet that night. It went very well, and led to a musical collaboration for several years to come.
It can be said that “Veðurløg” (1981) by Karsten Vogel, which was a commissioned (NOMUS) work from Havnar Jazzfelag, was one of the highlights of the record releases at that time. Most of the musicians who play in the band “Karsten Vogel & Fagrir Fuglar” this October have played on this particular release:
Karsten Vogel (saxophone)
Ólavur Øster (guitar)
Kristian Blak (keyboard)
Jóhannus á Rógvu Joensen (bass)
– and then comes Jósva Debes (drums)
Karsten has visited the Faroe Islands with several different projects, and with this he has been involved in developing the music in the Jazz Society. Especially the distinctive rock-jazz style it represents.
We at Havnar Jazzfelag are pleased to be able to invite Karsten to conduct the concert once again – now after more than 50 years as a visiting musician in Faroe Islands – and as the first international soloist in the club.
After the concert with Karsten Vogel & Fagrir Fuglar there will be a concert with singer/songwriter Lyon Hansen. Born and raised in the town of Gøtugjógv.
Lyon Hansen’s next-door neighbours were a church, a congregation hall, a bank, and the ocean. His songs are tales of sorrow and joy, madness and tranquillity – where truth becomes a lie, and the other way around. Described by the Guardian as “Nilssonesque pop-rock”, he has an echo of something distant but familiar at the same time. A sermon you can’t hear – but can feel. Lyon Hansen has recently released the digital album “Skull-sized Kingdom”, and will play a good mix of new and old songs by him, as well as some old blues.
