At a railway station, a man and a woman meet. Over the course of a single night, the woman tells her life story – about a youthful love that never let go, a relationship that had to be lived in secret, and a life shaped by the norms of the time.
The production Nothing Grows by Moonlight is based on Torborg Nedreaas’ 1947 novel, a landmark work of Norwegian post-war literature. The novel caused a great stir with its uncompromising portrayal of women’s living conditions and was among the first to openly and in detail describe an illegal abortion.
Agder Nye Teater transforms the novel into an intense theatrical story about love, shame, freedom and responsibility. A production that connects the life of a woman in the past with questions that remain relevant today: What kind of life do we dream of? Which choices shape us? And what happens when society’s norms collide with human longing?
