Make your own high quality drum

In connection to Festívalhöll, Inger Johanne Syverud and Magnus Tromborg Thayer from Ing.Borg will teach drum making. We believe there are no better teachers than these two for this.

While direct archaeological finds of Viking drums are rare due to organic materials decaying, strong evidence suggests Vikings used drums, likely similar to Sámi shaman drums or frame drums, for rituals, storytelling, entertainment, and possibly battle.

During this course, you’ll have the chance to make a traditional drum. To support you through the process, we have prepared various types of hides from Scandinavian animals, such as roe deer, red deer, reindeer, moose, and goat. You will also learn how to dye them using plants and herbs.

This course is open to everyone, regardless of experience. We will guide you through the entire drum-making process. It is an extensive process, and while we will assist you in every way possible, you should expect to put in some effort.

When you have finished creating your beautiful drums we have an extra offer for those who want to participate. You are welcome to try shamanic work, including drum journeys. While it may be an advantage to have experience with shamanic practice, it is not a requirement.

Inger and Magnus Tromborg Syverud have over 30 years of experience building shamanic drums. They are also making drums for musicians, an example is a drum for Wardruna that are behind the music for the tv show Vikings.

Inger Johanne is a certified eco-therapist from the Human Education Group and has over 25 years of experience with nature spirituality with a focus on Nordic traditions. She sees nature as her home, a metaphor for her condition and, not least, her roots. She is very experienced in making drums and rattles. She has a passion for Runes as well.

Magnus is a trained carpenter. He is interested in the connection to nature through farming and self-sufficiency, and has a very practical approach to spirituality with the immediate: the farm, the family and the land wights. Magnus leads sweat lodges and wilderness trips at Ing.Borg.

Language is Norwegian and Danish (English if needed) and lasts 19 hours spread over 3 days.

The course takes place at "Virkið" in Sandur:
Monday July 6th 3 to 8 pm
Tuesday July 7th 10 am to 8 pm
Wednesday July 8th 10 am to 2 pm

The price includes access to tools during the course, materials, Viking snacks and drinks.
