SEPTEMBER IN THE FAROE ISLANDS

September in the Faroe Islands is a time when the islands really are the most beautiful in terms of color, light and shade as they begin to settle into a cosy, autumnal rhythm. The crisp air carries the scent of the sea, and the landscapes start to glow with warm, earthy tones. While the days grow shorter, there’s still plenty of daylight to explore. The weather can be a mix of sunshine, mist, and the occasional rain shower, adding a touch of drama to the already stunning scenery.

The living room is cleared. The host taps a wine glass with a knife, and people file in... Soon every seat in the modern, glass-and-wood house is taken, a bottle of schnapps is passed around, and a few babies are passed around, too.

TOP THINGS TO DO IN SEPTEMBER

Wondering what to do in a place like the Faroe Islands in September? What to bring, how to prepare? Well, first things first, make sure you pack your camera gear for a stunning show of natural wonders and a versatile wardrobe because the weather likes to play practical jokes on you here, by changing every 10 minutes but this is part of the islands’ charm, creating a dramatic and constantly shifting landscape. ‘Hoyma’ concerts (home): For one Fall night on September 21st, a handful of homes in Sydrugøta, on the island of Eysturoy, open their doors and host intimate concerts with faroese artists, called HOYMA. It starts with a brave ocean dip & sauna in the morning (by the beach), followed by a sort of musical home-crawl and delightful snacks & refreshments.

Wellness in the wild: Choose a natural alternative to wellness by diving into crystal-clear Atlantic waters, Where temperatures mostly stay cool and mild, then warm up in a cliffside hot tub or a sauna by the village bay with healing views.
Dine in a local ‘Heim’ (home): Enjoy the warmth of Faroese friendliness with 'Heimablídni'. Enjoy a traditional lamb roast, fish or a steaming bowl of healthy soup while getting a more intimate experience of what life is like living on these islands.

Sea adventures: Embark on sea adventures in most weather, from kayaking through serene fjords and sailing past towering cliffs, catching your dish of the day, to surfing Atlantic swells and exploring hidden sea caves*.

TIPS FROM AN ISLANDER

  1. In case of art curiosity: Visit the many museums or see some form of artistic monument out in public, almost every village will have a monument or space open for visitors. 
  2. Back in time: Visit The 200-year-old farmhouse (The Open Air Museum) in Tórshavn with an accompanying barn, a smithy and a potato house.
  3. Local Farmers Market: On the first Sunday of each month the centre of Tórshavn “Vágsbotnur” is transformed into a vegetable and harvest haven. Depending on the season you can expect the tastiest carrots, salads, potatoes, and even homemade rhubarb jam made with love. 
  4.  Grab a pastry and a coffee at one of our favourite bakeries, Breyðvirkið, with fluffy buns, organic sourdough and sweet delights made with love.

FAROESE WEATHER IN SEPTEMBER

As summer fades, September brings cooler temperatures ranging from 7 to 12 degrees Celsius (45 to 54 degrees Fahrenheit). While the days grow shorter, there’s still plenty of daylight to explore. The weather can be unpredictable with a mix of sun, mostly misty, and the occasional rain shower (surprise). In September the Faroe Islands has up to 13 hours of daylight, with sunrise at around 7.00 AM and sunset at 8.00 PM.
