Nólsoy - Half Day Tour
Short ferry trip to Nólsoy with walking, birdlife and local stories
Escape to the peaceful island of Nólsoy, just a short ferry ride from Tórshavn. This guided hiking tour offers a unique blend of birdlife, local culture, and tranquil island scenery.
After a 20-minute boat journey across the strait, you arrive in a small, charming harbour where colourful houses line the shore and waves roll onto a sandy beach. The quiet atmosphere and lack of traffic create a sense of stepping into another world.
The walk begins through the village, passing the white wooden church and continuing across gentle grasslands toward the northern part of the island. Along the way, you may spot puffins and other seabirds, as Nólsoy is known for its rich birdlife and nearby colonies, including one of the world’s largest storm petrel populations.
A stop is made at the memorial of Nólsoyar Páll, a key historical figure who challenged the Danish trade monopoly. Your guide will also share stories about Ove Joensen, famous for rowing solo from the Faroe Islands to Denmark. His legacy lives on in the annual Ovastevna festival celebrated on the island.
On the northeastern side, you’ll experience how narrow the island is, with dramatic views of the North Atlantic Ocean crashing against the cliffs. The contrast between the calm village life and the powerful surrounding nature is striking.
The tour also includes a visit to the Ovasavn, dedicated to Ove Joensen’s remarkable journey. Afterwards, there is time to relax in the village, where you’ll find a small grocery store, cafés, and a cosy local atmosphere before returning by ferry.
This easy and scenic hiking tour is perfect for those looking to experience Faroese culture, history, and birdlife in a relaxed setting close to the capital.
