HEALTH & SAFETY

The Faroe Islands are renowned for their safety, with virtually no crime, making it one of the most secure places in the world. Visitors can feel at ease knowing that personal safety is rarely a concern. Health risks are also minimal, and no special precautions are required. Both the local cuisine and tap water are safe to enjoy—the water, in fact, is exceptionally fresh and delicious straight from the tap.

That said, the Faroese landscape deserves respect and careful attention, particularly in more remote areas. Weather conditions can shift suddenly, with fog, wind, or rain quickly transforming hiking and sailing into potentially hazardous activities. Nevertheless, by exercising common sense and staying aware of the environment, it is unlikely that you will encounter any serious danger. Please read our guide to safe hiking for more information.

Medical & Emergency Assistance

In an emergency, dial 112. This will connect you to police, fire, and medical services anywhere in the Faroe Islands.

GP consultations and appointments: For non-urgent medical help, you need to make an appointment with your assigned general practitioner. A directory of GPs and healthcare providers is available at heilsutrygd.fo.

After-hours medical advice: Call 1870 for medical guidance before visiting an emergency room. It’s best to call ahead and get advice from healthcare professionals.

Pharmacy and dental services: Pharmacies in several towns offer after-hours support. Emergency dental assistance is available in Tórshavn; contact via phone, and note that services may vary daily.

Faroese Police: The central police station is at Yviri við Strond 15–17, FO-110 Tórshavn. You can reach them by phone at (+298) 351448 or 114. The service is open daily and connects directly to police, rescue, and fire services.

Health Insurance

Citizens of the Nordic countries and the United Kingdom are covered under their national public health agreements while visiting the Faroe Islands. All other visitors must obtain valid travel health insurance before their trip. This ensures access to necessary healthcare services during your stay in case of illness or accident.
Please note that the Faroe Islands are outside the EU, so your travel insurance must also cover countries beyond the European Union.
