HEIMABLÍDNI: DINE IN THE HOMES OF THE FAROESE

Heimablídni

phonetically spelt as “hi-mɑ-blyd-ne

(Use this chart to hear the sounds for ɑ, y and e.)

Arguably, the best way to experience any culture is to integrate with the locals. And what better way to do this than over a delicious, traditional meal?

The Faroese phrase “heimablídni” translates directly as “home hospitality,” and all across the islands, you can enjoy a traditional Faroese home-cooked meal and authentic and intimate dining experiences in people’s homes.

In addition to tasting traditional homemade Faroese cuisine, you will also be regaled with exciting tales of the local area or village. You'll be hosted by everything from farmers and fishermen to general food enthusiasts.

These underground restaurants, with rates sometimes as little as DKK 330 (approx. €45) per person, offer you the opportunity to sample new food, often dissimilar to the food usually served in restaurants, in personal environments that give you a proper taste of Faroese culture.

Sometimes, a perfect stranger is the best dinner host.

TIP

  • Would you like to experience a traditional Faroese home dinner, ‘Heimablídni’, during your stay on the Faroe Islands? We recommend that you schedule it early on your trip, as the hosts are knowledgeable about the area and can provide helpful travel tips and recommendations during your visit.

  • Some 'Heimablídni' offer breakfast and lunch, so if you're looking for something unique to do in the morning, visit a local home for a good start!

”hosts go out of their way to create the best possible experience for the guests. It’s not just about the food. Guests get to spend the evening to truly soak in an authentic Faroese culture and learn about the people, politics, music, and more.”
