Oyrarbakki – Tjørnuvík
An Easy and Scenic Ride from Magn at Oyrarbakki to Tjørnuvík
Description of the route
The ride starts at the Magn station in Oyrarbakki.
You will cycle across the only bridge crossing the Atlantic Ocean and pass through the villages of Nesvík, Langasandur, and Haldórsvík.
The route ends in Tjørnuvík. Tjørnuvík is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the Faroe Islands. The village and the surrounding landscape are particularly stunning, offering views of the open ocean and the famous sea stacks of Risin and Kellingin. During the summer months, Tjørnuvík is typically bustling with visitors.

For those exploring the area on foot, a walk around the village should include a visit to the Excavation Site Tjørnuvík, where Viking Age discoveries have been made, offering a glimpse into the settlement’s ancient history.
North of the village lies Tjørnuvíksstakkur, where locals graze their sheep. A few times each summer, trips are arranged using a cable car to reach the stack. Another notable hike is the popular trail to Saksun, which also starts here.

Historically, Tjørnuvík was a church village for both Haldórsvík and Saksun. However, shortly after the church in Haldórsvík was built in 1856, the Tjørnuvík church was dismantled, with parts of it relocated to Saksun. This was likely due to Haldórsvík’s growth at the time, driven by the fishing industry and its better conditions for rowing boats. Church services were not held in Tjørnuvík again until 1937.

Inspiration / Alternative routes
Visit Haldórsvík Church, designed by parish priest Carl Vilhelm Prytz and inspired by Frederiksberg Church in Denmark. Per í Nesinum built the church, but financial issues meant it wasn’t as tall as planned. Consecrated in 1856 with V.U. Hammershaimb present, it was rebuilt in 1932 to match the original design. With raised walls and a new entrance hall, it was rededicated by Provost Jákup Dahl, with a sermon by Reverend K. Grøn.

Special note
Bringing refreshments like water and a snack is a good idea for the journey. As traffic can be high at certain times of the day, it's best to aim for low-traffic time slots and parts of the year for a more peaceful experience. This route is also perfect for those wishing to bring their bike—take bus 400 from Farstøðin in Tórshavn or Klaksvík and enjoy a scenic ride back.
