Syðradalur – Trøllanes
A peaceful and scenic ride through Kalsoy’s remote villages and mountain tunnels.
Description of the route
The ride begins at the ferry port in Syðradalur, where you arrive from Klaksvík. From here, you cycle through broad, open valleys and gentle hills, passing through four villages and five mountain tunnels. The first tunnel is long but downhill and easy—just be patient, as you won’t see the light at the end until you’re almost there. Once past the first tunnel, the rest of the ride feels smoother and more relaxed.
Essential cycling equipment for tunnels
Your bike must have a bell, a white reflector visible from the front, yellow reflectors on the pedals and wheels, and a red reflector at the back. This is significant in the Faroe Islands, where cyclists often encounter tunnels.
When bicycling in the dark or fog, you must have a working white light at the front and a red at the back.
A recommended stop is Mikladalur, where you can park your bike and walk down to the shoreline to see the iconic statue of the Seal Woman (Kópakonan), which stands by the sea, watching over the fjord. Just before the descent to the statue, you’ll pass Café Eðge—a cosy little spot perched right on the cliff’s edge. The name is a clever play on edge, and the view from here certainly lives up to it: wide open ocean, dramatic cliffs, and a perfect place for a warm drink and a pause.
As you continue north, the road passes along the coastline with fantastic views of Kunoy and the surrounding mountains. The ride ends in the quiet and scenic village of Trøllanes, where you get a true sense of life in a small, remote Faroese community. Near the end of the road, you’ll find a tiny kiosk by the end of the world, selling local farm products and snacks. While it may look like something set up for visitors, it’s a year-round lifeline for the villagers, used by locals who do their main shopping in Klaksvík and pop in here for a sweet treat and a chat when needed.
