Like so much else irregular in the area, this too is a bit of a rare cleft, called Ravnagjógv. Photo: Óli Gardshodn

Enjoy stunning views on the easy, peaceful Kollafjørður - Skælingur hike in the Faroe Islands. Perfect for nature lovers.

A beautiful, varied, and pleasant hike with great views. The route first goes up along Brekká in Kollfjarðardalur, crosses the ridge by the large tarn and the unusual columnar basalt, and then continues down the slopes to Skælingur, where the Streymoy Sill leaves its mark on the landscape.

The hike begins by crossing the Oyggjarvegur road and heading up along Brekká, climbing to the cairn 140 m above the road. Unfortunately, there is no marked path from Oyggjarvegur, so you must find a good spot to start the ascent. Once at the cairn, the route turns toward the Tarn in Brekkurnar. The name comes from the valley on the Skælingur side, which is called “up in Brekkurnar.” Here, the people of Skælingur used to cut their peat, and they cut so far up that Kollafjørður came into view.

It’s a truly special experience to walk across the ridge and down through the slopes toward Skælingur, with excellent views north through Vestmannasund. At first, the hike is primarily characterised by the striking columnar basalt at Regnsendi, part of the Streymoy Sill. A bit further down toward Skælingur, you can see how this sill—an irregular geological intrusion—continues southward, slanting down beneath Skælingsfjall, which at 767 m is the fourth-highest mountain on Streymoy.

This geologically fascinating area, stretching from Regnsendi south to Stórareyn, is stunning and much loved by geologists. You can also observe other interesting geological features, such as intersecting ravines and irregular cliffs.

The walk down to Skælingur is both beautiful and cosy. Particularly scenic is the area by Kálvadalsá, which also offers fine views toward Ravnagjógv. The route continues down past Garðá, north of the large cowshed, and finally reaches the road where the path ends.
