Faroe Islands “Shutting Down” as Workers Strike

As of May 14th four major workers’ unions in the Faroe Islands have gone on strike, following unsuccessful negotiations for higher salaries. The strike is ongoing and can potentially impact various business activities and essential services for the time being, impacting supplies across the islands.

The consequences are as follows:

  • Gas stations are running out of gasoline and diesel.
  • Grocery stores lack their standard fresh food supplies, i.e. fruit, vegetables and fresh meat.
  • The lack of garbage collection has closed some schools and kindergartens
  • Although ferries between the islands are still operating, public buses have been impacted.
  • Flights are NOT impacted by the strike, however the luggage workers are, so you can expect a slight delay in transporting luggage from the plane onto the moving band.

We understand your concerns about the uncertainty caused by the ongoing strike and its impact on your travel plans, especially if you plan to visit the Faroe Islands in the coming days or weeks. Unfortunately, we do not have definitive information on when the strike will end. We apologize for any inconvenience this situation may cause and appreciate your understanding.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely for any updates.
